The Specialty

What a prosthodontist does that a general dentist doesn't.

A general dentist looks after everyday care and refers the harder restorative cases on. A prosthodontist is the specialist those cases go to, with three more years of training after dental school in replacing and rebuilding teeth, from a single implant or crown to dentures and a whole mouth, lab work included. The finished teeth are designed first, and the treatment is planned back from them.

The Lab

The lab inside the Alexandria office.

Duke Street has its own dental laboratory, as the Tysons Corner office does, so your teeth are made where you are treated.

Scanned, not molded

Your teeth are recorded with an intraoral scanner instead of a tray of putty, which is easier on a strong gag reflex, and become a 3D model to design on.

Designed down the hall

Crowns, bridges, veneers and implant teeth are designed in the office, so a shade or a shape is settled with you in person.

Milled, fired, put right fast

The design is milled and fired in the building rather than posted to an outside lab, so a restoration that seats a fraction high or misses the shade is corrected within days.

Questions

Seeing a prosthodontist in Alexandria: questions.

What is the difference between a prosthodontist and a dentist?
A prosthodontist is a dentist with three further years of specialty training, after dental school, in rebuilding and replacing teeth: implants, full arches, dentures, crowns and veneers. Dr. Esam Nahlah is board-certified in the specialty and sees patients at 2855 Duke Street in Alexandria as well as at the Tysons Corner office in McLean. What a prosthodontist does →
Do I need a referral to see the prosthodontist in Alexandria?
No. You can book with the Duke Street office directly on (571) 617-7245. Dentists who want to send a patient can use the practice's referral page. For referring dentists →
Can I get a second opinion in Alexandria?
Yes. Second opinions on implant surgery are free: bring the plan and any scans from the other office, and Dr. Nahlah reads them alongside a cone-beam scan of his own.
Is sedation available at the Alexandria office?
Yes: nitrous oxide or oral sedation, given by the practice's own team. The practice does not offer IV sedation or general anesthesia. Mention it when you book, because oral sedation means arranging a ride both ways.Sedation in Alexandria →
Does the Alexandria office take dental insurance?
Most PPO dental plans are taken, and the claim is filed for you rather than left to you. Bring your card to the first visit; payment plans through the practice's financing partners are also available.Insurance and financing →
Does Dr. Nahlah place implants himself?
Yes. He plans the implants, places them and makes the teeth that go on them, so the surgery follows the finished teeth. At Duke Street those teeth come from the lab in the building.Implants in Alexandria →
