Veneers or Something Else

Three questions settle it at the first visit.

Is it only the color? Then whitening comes first, about an hour in the chair, and it may be all the smile needs. Porcelain, if you still want it, is made afterwards in the shade your teeth settle at.

Is the tooth strong enough? A veneer covers only the front of a tooth. One that is broken or badly weakened needs a crown over the whole tooth, and the same lab makes it.

Is the bite behind the damage? Teeth that chip or wear because of how they meet have a bite problem first, and you are told so before porcelain is discussed.

The Shade

The color is settled before the porcelain is made.

Porcelain holds the color it is made in for good, so the shade is decided before the veneers are made:

  • Whitening first, when it is part of the plan
  • Your face, lips and smile photographed for the design
  • The shade chosen with you, beside your natural teeth
  • The mock-up tried over your teeth before any preparation
  • The fit checked before anything is bonded

With the lab in the same office on Duke Street, the shade is argued over in person rather than written on a form, changed until you are happy with it, and a remake takes days, not weeks.

Can I see my veneers before they are made?
Yes, twice. A free Digital Smile Design shows the result first, and before any tooth is prepared a mock-up of the design is tried over your own teeth and adjusted until you are happy with it.
How many visits do veneers take?
A planning visit, then as few as two: one to prepare and scan the teeth and fit temporaries, one to bond the finished veneers. The porcelain is made in the Duke Street lab in between.Porcelain veneers explained →
Do veneers cover stains that whitening cannot?
Yes. Porcelain covers the front of the tooth, so staining deep in the enamel no longer shows. Where whitening alone would be enough, it is offered first.Teeth whitening →
